CLIL and Blended Learning

The 2012 Sophia University CALL Seminar focused on CLIL this year and the presentations feautred a number of speakers who brought knowledge and practical ideas from a wide range of fields in Lanaguage Teahching. Dr. Makoto Ikeda gave a very practical workshop in Japanese about exactly what CLIL is and how it works as a methodology, mentioning Lower Order Thinking Skills and Higher Order Thinking Skills. Dr. Ikeda also talked about the importance of involvement and gave participants a chance to compare traditional EFL materials with CLIL materials in order for them to get a firmer grip on the exact nature of the CLIL classroom. After that, I also gave a presentation in which I gave a mini-lesson on how Alternative Energy using WebQuests.

There was also a session by distinguished professor, Dr. Kensaku Yoshida, director of the Sophia University Language Centre, all about teaching extensive reading. Overall the session was very successful and the seminar had the highest attendance in the history of the Sophia CALL Seminars, perhaps an indication of the growing popularity of CLIL here in Japan.
